Google has announced the release of a new Chrome beta for Mac, Linux, and Windows platforms. The new version delivers crash and stability fixes, according to Google's staff handling Chrome development, as well as a localization refresh. Chrome is a lightweight web browser based on the WebKit layout engine and application framework.
'Google Chrome 5.0.375.38 has been released to the Beta channel for Linux, Mac and Windows,' Anthony Laforge, of the Google Chrome Team, writes. Last week, Google announced Chrome 5.0.396.0 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, which reverted some changes from earlier builds (toolbar, omnibox and other UI elements), fixed bugs and (specifically for the Mac) further polished up the main frame UI, including the bookmark bar. On a more specific note, Google explained last week that Chrome's toolbar, omnibox and other UI changes reverted for Chrome 5 had been restored in this build.
The developers enumerated the changes affecting all supported platforms, adding that they had also managed to address 'a bug related to scheme stripping that could cause URLs of the form ‘http://ftp.foo.com' to be misnavigated, by not stripping the scheme in this case.' Other bugs, related to stripping 'http://' and its interaction with the clipboard, have also been addressed, while, 'Chrome should now prepend schemes onto the pasted text in a variety of situations,' the developers further noted last week.
A single Mac-specific change was documented in the release notes – 'continual polish to main frame UI, including the bookmark bar,' while on the Linux side, 'Bookmark bar icons should no longer be cropped under some GTK themes,' Google said. A few known issues were also mentioned.
The Google Chrome team has updated the dev channel with a new release of Google Chrome for Mac and Linux. The dev channel is now focused on bug fixes as well as a new defense for cross-site scripting attacks, according to the Google Chrome blog.
Chrome version 4.0.207.0 for Mac and Linux brings the following changes to the table, as far as all platforms are concerned: reflective XSS filter for better security against a common attack ('see the mailing list post for more information,' the development team says); fixed extraneous horizontal scrollbars in Gmail.

On the Linux side, the team has added external protocol dialog and the ability to handle external protocols, e.g. mailto: links. Chrome 4.0.207.0 also fixes a crash when switching to a tab containing audio/video elements.
As far as extensions are concerned, developers have added an auto-update now button to the chrome://extensions page, while fixing a crash on Mac OS X when pressing 'load unpacked extension' in the chrome://extensions page.
